The standard periodization of European music history is hardly applicable to colonial American repertoires.Nevertheless, those stylistic labels have never ceased to work, explicitly or implicitly, as general concepts emtek 2113 that anchor historical narratives.In this paper I attempt a contribution to the formulation of styles (understood as ideal types) through a probe-like approach.Representative examples of a couple of important American repertoires (chanzonetas by Gaspar Fernández lolasalinas.com and villancicos by Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla) are analyzed for the sake of inducing some aesthetic principles central to their respective poetics.

These are then confronted with the labels usually employed in our colonized musicology: "Renaissance" for the first, "Baroque" for the second.
